The Hypocrisy of America and Roe -v- Wade

President Obama's recent comments about protecting "a woman's constitutional right to an abortion" seem quite hypocritical coming from a man of (partially) African-American decent. Black slaves in the U.S. were kept as property, exploited and abused largely because they had no voice and were perceived as less than human -- with owners possessing a "constitutional right" to retain them as upheld by the supreme court in Dred Scott, among other places. As their voices began to penetrate the legislature and society through courageous abolitionists, the tide began to turn.

The Declaration of Independence declares that God gave all people the same "inalienable" rights and equal value as human beings. Further, it states that all have a right to life, among other things.  This phrase is not interpreted to mean all have an equal right to life UNLESS their life becomes an inconvenience to that of another. The hypocrisy of our nation that existed between the time of ratification of the Declaration of Independence and the abolition of slavery under the 13th Amendment is evident to all today, yet remains in tact concerning the unborn.

The unborn, you see, cannot speak for themselves so it is easy for society to neglect their rights in the name of another's perceived rights. Slavery lasted as a result of demeaning the value of one people group for the convenience and profit of another. It was the mindset of the culture as long as the voices of slaves were kept silent. It is no different with the unborn; they are considered to be less than human notwithstanding possessing a human brain, heart, body and blood, and most importantly, eternal souls.

In America, we regularly prosecute people who kill people for convenience sake. We don't condone taking life -- with one exception. The truth is, abortion is big business as well as big politics -- votes as well as donations.

The moral authority to end slavery had to do with recognizing that African people were not a commodity to be exploited for the convenience or the economic benefit of anyone; they are human beings. Dehumanizing black-skinned people provided cover for evil acts against them just as dehumanizing children in the womb provides cover for evil acts against them. No people group should remain silent on the moral travesty of abortion, but even more so, those people groups with a history of abuse, persecution or extermination

As a matter of disclaimer, I am not attempting to manipulate the national psyche towards a moral position to proselytize for Christianity. You can't become a Christian simply by adopting moral positions. Protecting innocent life is plainly and simply consistent with our national conscience! I just think it's time we end the hypocrisy when it comes to denial of the rights of the unborn.
